10 Quick Tips to Reduce Energy Consumption
- Seal and insulate your home. Sealing air infiltration may decrease your energy consumption by up to 10%.
- Install a programmable thermostat. They are easy to install, and may reduce your heating and cooling energy consumption when used properly.
- Switch to LED or CFL light bulbs. They last up to 10 times longer and use up to 66% less electricity or more than standard incandescent bulbs.
- Change or clean your HVAC air filters once a month. This will reduce energy consumption and help extend the life of your Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning (HVAC) system.
- Install ceiling fans. They may reduce energy consumption by circulating air.
- When shopping for new appliances, look for ENERGY STAR qualified appliances. These appliances will often significantly reduce energy consumption.
- Install energy efficient doors and windows. Replacing un-insulated doors and windows can noticeably reduce your energy consumption.
- Only run the dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer with full capacity loads. This may reduce your total energy consumption from these appliances.
- In winter, set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower. In summer, set your thermostat to 72 degrees F or higher. This should reduce the total energy consumption of your HVAC system.
- Reduce your water heater temperature to 120 degrees F and install a water heater insulator. This should reduce the total energy consumption of your hot water system.
