As president of Rockville, Maryland based Tabor Design Build, John practices what he calls “stress-free remodeling.” John believes the best way to help his clients make decisions about their renovations is to put himself in their shoes. So John decided to install a solar electric system on his own house.

Wes & Camela Speer

The Speers are an average American family. They have two kids. He works in food services for the public school system, she works for a non-profit. They do not consider themselves wealthy, and they do not consider themselves extreme environmentalists either. But when Wes and Camela Speer began building their home, incorporating solar power was a foregone conclusion. However, it took a while to find the right company for their project.

Don Foot

Don Foot always knew that someday he would go solar, but it took an act of nature to get him there. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel swept through and left 20 inches of water in the family home. There was no way to save the house, so Don decided to tear it down and rebuild it with solar.

Abe Getty

As a child in the 1950’s, Abe Getty used a magnifying glass and the rays of the sun to create a tiny flame. During that classic experiment, he became amazed by the power of the sun. As he grew older, his fascination continued to blossom.

Jerome Smith

Jerome Smith remembers growing up in Gaithersburg, MD and his mom—a single mother raising two boys—always worrying about the bills. He also remembers when he was in junior high school and saw solar panels for the first time. “I thought, ‘wow, if we had that we wouldn’t have to pay bills,’ ” Jerome said.

Wayne Truax

From his 30 years of active duty with the Coast Guard in California, where solar panels are used to power lighthouses, Wayne Truax knows solar panels are tough and dependable. “I saw solar being used in the most extreme environments — out in the middle of the ocean as well as in rugged areas and it was very durable,” he recalled.

Ken Rimestead

In 2010, Ken Rimestead was paying $195 a month for his electric bills, and he was getting tired of it. So when he found out his 4-bedroom Fort Washington home was a good candidate for a solar system, he hired Standard Solar to install 22 panels on his home’s south facing roof. Within a few months, instead of paying the utility company, Ken received a check for the amount of electricity his panels produced.
